Four people, including three children and a 25-year-old teacher, were killed when a 16-year-old former student opened fire inside a special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

A teacher who bravely confronted an armed teenager and a father who intervened to stop the attack have been praised for their actions during a deadly shooting at an elementary school in the United States.

The attack occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, leaving three children and a teacher dead and two others injured.

According to police, the suspected attacker, identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, entered the school and opened fire inside a classroom serving pupils with special educational needs.

Investigators said the teenager fired as many as 15 rounds during the attack, carrying additional shotgun ammunition when he was eventually stopped.

Teacher Confronts Gunman in Desperate Attempt to Save Pupils

In a remarkable act of courage, a teacher reportedly threw her mobile phone at the armed teenager before tackling him and attempting to wrestle the shotgun from his hands.

The struggle took place inside the classroom, where children and staff were exposed to the gunfire.

Although the teacher was not injured, police said her intervention almost certainly helped prevent further bloodshed.

The situation came to an end when a 36-year-old father of two pupils at the school entered the classroom and shot the suspect with a legally carried pistol.

The man, identified by his family to American media as Kaylub Giamanco, had reportedly been driving past the school when he witnessed the teenager firing at a vehicle in the school car park before shooting through a window to gain entry.

Giamanco, a carpenter who had just finished lunch, reportedly retrieved his firearm from his vehicle and rushed into the school after realizing the danger.

Police said he fired multiple shots at the suspect, killing him before officers arrived to take control of the scene.

Authorities have praised the actions of both the teacher and the armed bystander, saying their intervention helped prevent the tragedy from becoming even worse.

“To the people who showed courage in the face of such violence and intervened to prevent this tragedy from being any worse, we owe you a debt of gratitude,” Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said.

Teacher and Five-Year-Old Boy Among Victims

Authorities have identified two of the four people killed in the attack as 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and five-year-old pupil Rhoam Summer.

Lambert’s family described her as a compassionate woman whose ambition was to teach in the school district where she grew up.

In a statement released through the police, her family said she had a deep commitment to helping vulnerable children.

“Megan was compassionate and had a huge heart. She always fought for the underdog and those with special needs,” the family said.

Her death has left family members and the wider community mourning a young educator whose career was built around supporting children and helping them learn.

Summer’s grandfather, Bryan Jolly, also expressed the family’s devastation over the loss of the five-year-old.

Speaking to American media, he described his grandson as bright, mischievous, fun-loving and fearless.

The two other children killed in the attack, aged eight and 11, have not been publicly identified at their families’ request.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through the Bend community, with residents mourning the victims and paying tribute to those who attempted to protect the children.

Two Others Injured in the Attack

Police confirmed that two additional victims were injured during the shooting.

They included a seven-year-old pupil, who was reported to be in serious but stable condition, and a 54-year-old teacher who remained under medical care.

The incident has renewed concerns about school safety and the vulnerability of children and educators during attacks involving firearms.

Authorities are continuing to establish the precise sequence of events and determine how the teenager obtained the shotgun.

Police Investigate Suspect’s Background and Motive

Police identified John as a former student at Silver Rail Elementary School who had previously been enrolled as a special educational needs pupil.

Investigators have executed a search warrant at his home as part of efforts to establish his movements before the attack, how he acquired the weapon and what motivated the shooting.

Police have not publicly established a motive for the attack.

Officials are also examining the circumstances that allowed the teenager to enter the school and reach the classroom.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed all the evidence gathered so far.

Trump and Oregon Governor Praise Intervention

United States President Donald Trump praised the bystander who fatally shot the suspect, describing him as a “great hero” during remarks to reporters on Friday.

Trump said the situation could have resulted in even greater loss of life without the intervention.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also acknowledged the man’s actions in stopping the attack while recognizing the emotional toll associated with such an experience.

Her remarks highlighted not only the importance of preventing further casualties but also the difficult aftermath faced by people who become directly involved in violent incidents.

For the families of the victims, however, the tragedy remains devastating, with three young pupils and a teacher losing their lives in a place intended for learning and care.

As investigators continue their work, the courage shown by the teacher and the father who intervened has become a central part of the story, even as the community struggles to come to terms with the lives lost.
