Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines has lost both legs after being struck by a vehicle in an alleged deliberate attack outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Her husband, Phil Haines, has confirmed that she remains alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital in Melbourne.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, October 21, Phil described the incident as horrendous, acknowledging the severity of his wife’s injuries while expressing hope for her recovery.

He said the family was grateful that Helen was still alive, adding that her heart and mind remained in good shape despite the devastating ordeal.

“Helen’s road to recovery will be long and difficult, but we know she is a fighter,” he said, thanking medical personnel, emergency responders and members of the public for their support.

The development has sent shockwaves through Australia’s political community, prompting renewed concerns about the safety of elected representatives and the growing threats faced by public officials.

Suspect Appears in Court

The alleged attacker, 43-year-old Brendan Nugent, appeared before a local court on Wednesday following his arrest shortly after the incident.

Nugent faces charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Court documents also indicate that he faces separate cannabis-related charges.

He did not apply for bail during his first court appearance and is expected to return to court in February 2027.

Police have indicated that additional charges could follow as investigations continue. Authorities are yet to establish a definitive motive for the alleged attack.

Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush said investigators were examining all possible explanations and that determining the suspect’s motivation remained central to the investigation.

Police have also confirmed that Nugent was not previously on their radar and that there was no known intelligence indicating a threat to Haines before the incident.

Investigators are examining whether medication or drug use played any role and whether there was a personal connection between the accused and the lawmaker.

How the Incident Happened

The incident occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. local time on Monday, October 19, outside Haines’ electorate office in Wangaratta, a regional town about 240 kilometres northeast of Melbourne.

According to reports, Haines was near her vehicle when a Toyota LandCruiser allegedly struck her, leaving her with critical injuries.

Bystanders reportedly intervened, pulling the driver from the vehicle and restraining him until police arrived.

Jacob and Jackie Evans were among the first people to assist the injured lawmaker. Jacob used a tourniquet from a medical kit in his vehicle to help control bleeding from one of her legs.

Jackie later recalled that Haines thanked them as they came to her aid.

The MP was taken for emergency medical treatment before being transferred to a Melbourne hospital, where surgeons worked to treat her severe injuries.

Her left leg was amputated on Monday, while doctors initially attempted to save her right leg. However, her husband confirmed on Wednesday that surgeons had also been forced to amputate the second leg.

Family Calls for Support as Recovery Begins

Despite the severity of the injuries, Phil Haines described his wife as a determined person who would do her best to recover with the support of her family and loved ones.

He expressed gratitude to hospital staff and supporters from Australia and other countries who had reached out following the incident.

The family also encouraged people wishing to demonstrate their support to consider donating to Save the Children.

Helen Haines represents the federal electorate of Indi in Victoria and was first elected to Australia’s Parliament in 2019. She is an independent politician known for her work on regional issues and public accountability.

News of the attack has deeply affected the Wangaratta community, as well as political leaders across party lines.

Australian Leaders Condemn Violence

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed concern over the incident and confirmed that he had spoken with Phil Haines following the attack.

Albanese also drew attention to the threats and abuse experienced by female politicians, noting that such hostility can include sexualised threats and other forms of intimidation.

Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, also called for greater compassion, respect and civility in public discourse.

Speaking alongside Haines’ husband, Mostyn urged Australians to reflect on the incident and consider how political disagreements can be handled without hostility or violence.

Her remarks came amid broader concerns about the safety of politicians, with authorities reporting an increase in threats against senior public office holders.

Questions Raised Over Security for Politicians

The attack has reignited debate about the level of protection provided to elected representatives in Australia, particularly when they interact directly with members of the public at local electorate offices.

Australian Federal Police have indicated that providing personal protection to all 226 federal parliamentarians would require substantial staffing and resources.

Instead, protection arrangements are generally determined by assessments of an individual’s position, circumstances and the threats they face.

The investigation into the alleged attack remains ongoing, with police continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the suspect’s possible motive.

For Haines and her family, however, the immediate priority remains her medical care and the difficult recovery ahead.

As messages of support continue to arrive, her husband’s statement has conveyed the family’s determination to stand by her through the challenges that lie ahead.

The case remains before the courts, and the allegations against the accused have yet to be determined by a court.
