Manager Mikel Arteta described it as a “magical moment” after teenage sensation Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history during Arsenal’s dramatic 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday.
The 16-year-old midfielder first made his mark in the 89th minute when his cross led to the opening goal. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford misjudged the delivery, allowing Viktor Gyökeres to tap the ball into the net and finally break the deadlock at the Emirates Stadium.
Moments later, Dowman produced a stunning finish of his own. With Pickford upfield for a last-minute corner, the Arsenal youngster sprinted from inside his own half and calmly slotted the ball into an empty net to seal the victory.
At 16 years and 73 days, Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, adding another record to his breakthrough season. He had earlier become Arsenal’s youngest ever starter and also the youngest player to appear in the UEFA Champions League, both achievements coming while he was still 15.

Arteta praised the teenager’s impact after the match.
“It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal built up. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen. It was magical,” Arteta said.

The Arsenal boss also credited Dowman with transforming the match after coming off the bench with 16 minutes remaining.
“He changed the game every time he got the ball. To do it at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win, it’s just not normal.”
The victory moved Arsenal 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table, although defending champions Manchester City F.C. still have two games in hand.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Arsenal struggled to break down Everton until the late drama unfolded.
Arteta admitted the tension was evident but praised his players’ composure.
“You have to stay composed and be relentless in your desire to win the game and make something happen. The team had the spirit today.”
