Episode 7: The Calling Never Stops
I don’t know how long I’ve been here.
Time doesn’t move the same under the streetlight.
Days blur into nights.
Nights stretch endlessly.
Sometimes the sun rises—but the light above me never goes out.
It’s always there.
Always watching.
People pass by occasionally.
Neighbors.
Strangers.
Even children.
They walk right through the edge of the light… but they never see me.
I scream.
I wave.
I try to warn them.
But to them—
I don’t exist.
All they notice is the flicker.
That subtle, strange flicker.
On.
Off.
On.
Off.
Sometimes they pause.
Sometimes they look.
And when they do—
I feel it.
That same pull I once felt.
That same invisible thread wrapping around them.
Choosing.
Waiting.
The first time it happened, I tried harder.
I forced every ounce of strength I had into a scream.
And for a moment—
One of them reacted.
A man.
He stopped walking.
Looked around.
Frowned.
“Hello?” he called.
Hope surged inside me.
Yes. Yes, that’s it—
But then the light flickered again.
And he turned his attention upward.
Toward the bulb.
Toward me.
I felt the shift instantly.
Like something inside the light had woken up.
Hungry.
Interested.
The man took a step closer.
And I felt it.
That terrifying realization.
The light wasn’t just trapping me.
It was replacing me.
Waiting for the next one.
I tried to scream louder.
Tried to warn him.
But the voice came first.
Soft.
Familiar.
Calling his name.
Not mine anymore.
His.
And I understood then.
Fully.
Horribly.
This wasn’t an accident.
It wasn’t random.
It was a cycle.
A selection.
A trade.
And now—
I am part of it.
Last night, I heard a new name.
Clear.
Soft.
Almost gentle.
Carried through the flicker.
I tried not to listen.
Tried to block it out.
But I couldn’t.
Because I recognized it.
Not from the street.
Not from the past.
But from somewhere closer.
Somewhere connected.
And as the light flickered again—
I realized something that made whatever was left of my heart sink.
It wasn’t just calling them.
It was calling you.
To Be Continued…
