Episode 3: The Passenger I Couldn’t See
I told myself it was my imagination.
Maybe the road bumps had shifted the seat.
But then…
I smelled something.
A familiar perfume.
Sweet.
Floral.
Soft.
My heart started racing.
I knew that perfume.
Mrs. Chioma Obi always wore it.
Every time she entered my car, the scent filled the air.
But she wasn’t there.
At least… that’s what I thought.
I checked the rear-view mirror again.
Mr. Obi was staring out the window.
But his eyes were wet.
Then he whispered something.
Very quietly.
“Chioma… we’re almost there.”
My hands tightened on the steering wheel.
“Sir?” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he slowly turned his head… toward the empty seat beside him.
And nodded.
Like someone had just spoken to him.
That was the moment fear truly entered my chest.
Because I heard it too.
A faint whisper.
Soft.
Barely audible.
But clear enough to understand.
“Thank you… Henry.”
To be continued!
