Nigeria has taken a bold step onto the continental energy stage as the Dangote Refinery begins exporting refined petroleum products to multiple African countries, signaling a major shift in Africa’s fuel dependency.

The refinery, owned by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, confirmed that it has already shipped 12 cargoes totaling 456,000 tonnes of fuel to nations including Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo.

This milestone comes at a critical time when global oil markets are under pressure due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, which has disrupted supply routes through the strategic Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors.

According to the refinery’s management, the decision to begin exports was largely driven by increasing demand from African countries facing supply shortages and rising fuel costs. The company also revealed that it is receiving interest from markets beyond Africa, particularly for jet fuel, as global supply chains tighten.

With a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, the Dangote Refinery is now positioned not only to meet Nigeria’s domestic fuel needs but also to supply surplus products across the continent.

In a statement, the company noted that its operations are expected to strengthen energy security across West, East, and Central Africa, reducing reliance on imports from outside the continent.

However, despite this progress, Nigerians continue to feel the impact of global oil price fluctuations. In Lagos, petrol prices have surged from about ₦830 per litre to over ₦1,300 in recent weeks, raising concerns among consumers and businesses.

Before the refinery commenced operations in 2024, Nigeria—despite being Africa’s largest oil producer—depended heavily on imported refined fuel, often experiencing shortages and supply disruptions.

Industry experts say this latest development marks a turning point, positioning Nigeria as a key supplier of refined petroleum products in Africa and offering hope for long-term stability in the region’s energy market.

As global uncertainties persist, the Dangote Refinery’s export drive could redefine Africa’s role in the global oil economy—transforming the continent from a net importer to a growing hub for refined fuel supply.
