A Mexican court has sentenced three men to 158 years and nine months in prison each for the 2024 murders of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend, Carter Rhoad, in Baja California.

The lengthy sentences follow a case that attracted international attention and renewed concerns about the safety of tourists visiting parts of Mexico.

The three convicted men, identified in court as Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús, were found guilty of killing the three friends during what prosecutors described as an apparent robbery attempt involving their vehicle.

The victims were on a surfing trip in the coastal region of Baja California when they were attacked in April 2024. The incident occurred on a secluded beach near Ensenada, a destination known for attracting surfers and other tourists.

Bodies Found in a Well

According to evidence presented during the trial, the three victims were shot in the head, and their bodies were later discovered in a well after an extensive search.

The brothers and their American friend had crossed into Mexico from the United States less than 36 hours before the killings. Their bodies were not discovered until approximately a week later, after their families became increasingly concerned about their disappearance.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths shocked their families, local residents and the international surfing community, particularly because the friends were believed to have been targeted over their vehicle.

The killings also raised questions about security in a region where tourism plays an important role in the local economy.

Mother of Victims Speaks Out

During the court proceedings, Debra Robinson, the mother of Jake and Callum Robinson, addressed the court and described the devastating impact of losing her sons.

She said their murders had taken away “the future we had imagined with them”, expressing the profound grief experienced by the family following the tragedy.

The case attracted considerable attention in Australia, where the deaths of the two brothers prompted widespread expressions of sympathy and calls for justice.

The lengthy prison terms imposed on the three convicted men mark a significant development in the pursuit of accountability for the murders.

Alleged Ringleader’s Girlfriend Also Jailed

In a related development, the girlfriend of Jesús Gerardo, who was known by the alias “El Kekas” and was described as the alleged ringleader, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in November 2025 in a separate trial.

She had admitted to involvement in the robbery, according to reports on the case.

The separate conviction adds another development to a case that has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the robbery and the subsequent deaths of the three friends.

The identities of the three men sentenced in the latest proceedings were reported only by their given names, for legal reasons.

Concerns Over Tourist Safety in Baja California

The murders deeply unsettled residents and visitors in Ensenada, a coastal city widely associated with surfing, beaches and tourism.

Local surfers subsequently called for stronger security measures, citing other incidents of violence in the state and urging authorities to improve protection for residents and visitors.

Although the region remains an attraction for domestic and international tourists, the killings highlighted the risks that can arise when travelers venture into isolated locations.

Baja California relies significantly on tourism, making public confidence in the safety of its destinations an important concern for local businesses and the wider community.

For the families of Jake and Callum Robinson and their friend Carter Rhoad, however, the court’s decision represents a major step in a case defined by the sudden and devastating loss of three lives.

The prison sentences bring a significant legal milestone in the case, while the tragedy continues to serve as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the lasting impact it has on families and communities.
