Tears After I Do – Story By: Florinuke
A heartbreaking story of love, betrayal, and the secrets hidden behind a wedding ring.
CHAPTER ONE: THE PERFECT BRIDE
Kate had dreamed of marrying Bright since the day he promised her, “One day, I will make you my wife, and nothing will ever separate us.”
That promise became a reality on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Kate looked breathtaking in her white wedding gown, while Bright stood beside her, smiling as though he were the happiest man alive.
Friends called them the perfect couple. Her mother cried tears of joy, and Bright’s family welcomed Kate with warm embraces.
But just before the pastor pronounced them husband and wife, Kate noticed Bright’s phone vibrating repeatedly.
He glanced at the screen, and his smile disappeared.
“Is everything okay?” Kate whispered.
Bright forced a smile. “Everything is perfect, sweetheart.”
Then he kissed her forehead and said, “Let’s get married.”
Neither of them knew that before the night ended, those wedding vows would become the beginning of Kate’s worst nightmare.

CHAPTER TWO: THE MESSAGE AT MIDNIGHT
Their wedding reception was filled with laughter, music, and dancing. Kate believed she had finally found her happily-ever-after.
But at exactly midnight, while Bright slept beside her, his phone lit up.
A message appeared.
“Congratulations on your wedding, Bright. But remember, you promised to marry me first. Your wife deserves to know what happened to our baby.”
Kate’s heart stopped.
She read the message again, hoping she had misunderstood.
What baby?
With trembling fingers, she opened the conversation. There were photographs of Bright embracing a pregnant woman, screenshots of romantic messages, and a picture of a hospital scan.
The last message was sent just three days before their wedding.
“After you marry Kate, don’t expect me to remain silent.”
Kate’s wedding ring suddenly felt like a chain around her finger.
When Bright woke up and found her crying, he snatched his phone from her hands.
“Kate, I can explain!”
She stared at him through her tears.
“Tell me one thing, Bright. Did you marry me because you love me, or because you wanted to hide another woman?”
Bright said nothing.
And his silence destroyed the last piece of her heart.
CHAPTER THREE: THE MOTHER-IN-LAW’S SECRET
The following morning, Bright confessed that the woman was Vanessa, his former girlfriend. He claimed their relationship had ended months before he met Kate.
But he admitted Vanessa had become pregnant before their separation.
“I thought she had lost the baby,” he explained. “I never knew she was still pregnant.”
Kate wanted to believe him, but something did not add up.
Later that afternoon, Bright’s mother arrived with an envelope.
Inside were medical documents, bank transfer receipts, and a letter written by Vanessa.
Kate read the letter with shaking hands.
Vanessa had accused Bright’s mother of paying her to leave Bright and keep the pregnancy secret. The receipts showed that the payments continued until the week before the wedding.
Kate turned towards her mother-in-law.
“You knew about the baby?”
The older woman sighed.
“I did what I had to do. Vanessa was not suitable for my son. You came from a respectable family, and your marriage would protect our family’s reputation.”
Kate could hardly breathe.
“So you knew your son was hiding another woman’s pregnancy, and you still allowed me to marry him?”
Bright’s mother looked away.
Then she delivered the final blow.
“Kate, there is something else you should know. Bright did not choose you entirely by himself. Your father and I had an agreement long before this wedding.”
Kate froze.
“What agreement?”
Her mother-in-law’s answer would expose a betrayal far worse than infidelity.
CHAPTER FOUR: THE MARRIAGE THAT WAS BOUGHT
Kate confronted her father that evening.
At first, he denied everything. But when she placed the receipts and letter before him, his shoulders slumped.
He finally confessed.
Bright’s family had invested heavily in her father’s failing business. In return, both families had agreed that Kate and Bright would marry.
“Your father was going to lose everything,” he explained. “This marriage was the only way to save us.”
Kate stared at him in disbelief.
“So my happiness was the price you paid to save your business?”
“I wanted a secure future for you!”
“No, Daddy. You wanted a future you could afford.”
She walked out before he could respond.
When Bright returned home, he found Kate sitting beside her packed suitcase.
“Please, don’t leave me,” he begged. “I love you. Whatever happened before, I chose you.”
Kate looked at him.
“Did you choose me, Bright, or did our parents choose each other?”
“I made mistakes, but I can fix this.”
She shook her head.
“You cannot build a marriage on lies and expect love to hold it together.”
Bright fell to his knees, crying.
For the first time since their wedding, Kate saw him without the charming smile, expensive suit, or promises.
She saw a man who had allowed everyone around him to make decisions with her life.
And she realised that marrying him had been the biggest mistake she had ever made.
But just as she reached for her suitcase, Bright’s phone rang.
It was the hospital.
Vanessa had been involved in a serious accident.
And the child she had given birth to weeks earlier was fighting for his life.

CHAPTER FIVE: TEARS AFTER I DO
Bright rushed to the hospital, with Kate following reluctantly.
When they arrived, Vanessa was conscious but badly injured. Their premature baby was in intensive care.
Bright stood outside the neonatal unit, weeping as he watched the tiny child fighting for every breath.
Kate had never seen him so broken.
Vanessa turned towards her.
“I am sorry,” she whispered. “I should have told you before your wedding. But I was afraid his mother would take my child away.”
Kate’s anger slowly gave way to sorrow.
Three lives had been wounded by one family’s selfish decisions, and an innocent child was paying the highest price.
Bright approached Kate.
“Please, give me another chance. I will change. I swear.”
Kate removed her wedding ring.
“I loved you enough to spend my life with you, Bright. But I cannot spend my life wondering which part of your story is another lie.”
She placed the ring in his palm.
“I hope you become the man you promised to be. But I cannot be your wife while you learn how to become honest.”
Bright cried as she walked away.
Months later, Kate filed for divorce. Her father eventually lost his business, but for the first time, she refused to sacrifice her peace to save his reputation.
Bright took responsibility for his son and began rebuilding his life. Whether he regretted losing Kate or simply regretted his choices, only he could know.
On the day their divorce was finalised, Kate sat alone in her apartment, looking at an old photograph from their wedding.
She remembered the flowers, the music, the vows, and the man who had promised never to hurt her.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
Not because she wanted him back, but because she was mourning the future she had believed they would share.
She had entered marriage expecting forever.
Instead, she had discovered that sometimes the greatest heartbreak begins after the words “I do.”
