Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and opposition supporters against celebrating too soon following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of Senator David Mark as the party’s leader, stressing that the real political contest lies ahead.

Reacting to the apex court’s decision, Atiku described the judgment as a significant milestone in resolving the party’s internal leadership crisis, but warned that it should not be mistaken for a broader political victory.

“Even as we welcome the Supreme Court’s firm affirmation of Senator David Mark and the leadership of our great party, the African Democratic Congress, no one should be lulled into complacency,” he said in a statement.

The former vice president noted that while the ruling brings clarity and stability to the ADC after months of legal disputes, it represents only the beginning of a much larger struggle as attention gradually shifts to the 2027 general election.

Atiku framed the court’s decision as not just a win for the party, but a symbolic moment for Nigerians dissatisfied with the country’s current trajectory.

“This victory belongs to Nigerians, the millions who have refused to surrender their future. The road ahead remains long in our collective mission to reclaim and rebuild our country,” he added.

He further urged party loyalists and opposition supporters to remain committed and politically active, emphasizing the need for sustained effort and vigilance in the face of upcoming electoral challenges.

“We thank them, and we urge them to remain steadfast, because the struggle is far from over. As we press on, let this enduring truth guide us: eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” Atiku said.

The Supreme Court ruling is expected to stabilize the ADC, which has been grappling with internal divisions and leadership uncertainty. With the legal battle now settled, the party is likely to refocus on coalition-building, grassroots mobilization, and strategic planning ahead of the next election cycle.

For Atiku and other opposition figures, the judgment offers an opportunity to regroup and consolidate. However, it also underscores the more demanding task ahead—translating legal victories into electoral success in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive 2027 race.
