Mikel Arteta has challenged Arsenal to prove their resilience and title credentials as they look to bounce back from a pair of painful defeats ahead of a crucial Champions League quarter-final clash with Sporting Lisbon.

The Gunners head into Tuesday’s encounter under mounting pressure after suffering a shock 2-1 loss to second-tier Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday. That defeat came just two weeks after a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the League Cup final, ending Arsenal’s hopes of a historic quadruple.

Despite those setbacks, Arteta remains defiant, insisting this difficult spell is merely a test of his side’s character rather than a sign of collapse.

“In a season, you always have moments like this—normally two or three,” Arteta said. “This is the first moment we’ve had with a certain level of difficulty. If this is a difficult period, there are many others that are much more difficult. Let’s stand up, make ourselves comfortable and deliver like we’ve been doing all season.”

Arsenal’s recent slump—just their fifth defeat of the campaign and their first back-to-back losses—has triggered fresh doubts among fans, especially with the club still searching for its first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup. Three consecutive runners-up finishes in the Premier League have only intensified scrutiny over their ability to go one step further.

However, Arteta has thrown his full support behind his players, praising their efforts over the course of the season and taking responsibility for the recent dip in form.

“I love my players. What they have done for nine months, I’m not going to criticise them because we lost a game,” he said. “I’m going to defend them more than ever. Someone has to take responsibility—that’s me. And we have the most beautiful period of the season ahead of us.”

Arsenal remain firmly in control of their domestic ambitions, holding a commanding nine-point lead over second-placed Manchester City in the Premier League. They also travel to Lisbon as favourites, buoyed by last season’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Sporting during the group stage.

Striker Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as a key figure in recent weeks, finding form after a slow start to life at the Emirates. The Swedish forward scored Arsenal’s equaliser against Southampton and netted twice in the north London derby win at Tottenham. He also played a decisive role internationally, scoring Sweden’s late play-off winner against Poland to secure a place at the World Cup.

Nevertheless, injuries could complicate Arsenal’s ambitions. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are racing to regain fitness after missing the Southampton defeat and England’s recent friendlies, while defender Gabriel Magalhães is a doubt following a knee injury sustained in the same match.

Midfielder Christian Nørgaard echoed Arteta’s call for composure and unity, urging the squad to maintain a positive mindset during this critical juncture.

“The message is to have positive body language and keep talking with your team-mates and the coaching staff,” Nørgaard said. “It’s fine to be frustrated and analyse what went wrong, but we also have to look forward because there are so many big games coming up.”

With their Premier League title push and Champions League dream still alive, Arsenal now face a defining stretch of the season—one that will test not just their quality, but their character.
