Cristiano Ronaldo has moved another step closer to the unprecedented 1,000-goal career milestone after scoring a powerful header for Al Nassr in their Saudi Pro League encounter with Abha on Wednesday.
The Portuguese superstar broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, rising above his marker to connect with Angelo’s corner near the six-yard box. Ronaldo directed a firm header beyond Abha goalkeeper Donovan Leon and into the far post to give Al Nassr the lead.
The strike marked Ronaldo’s third goal in five Saudi Pro League appearances this season and his 132nd goal for Al Nassr since joining the Saudi club.
Al Nassr had controlled much of the match and created the more dangerous opportunities, but the league leaders initially struggled to turn their dominance into goals.
Ronaldo himself had failed to find the target with his opening two attempts before making his third opportunity count.
More importantly, the goal took Ronaldo’s official career tally to 979 goals, leaving the 41-year-old just 21 goals away from reaching 1,000.
The pursuit of the landmark has attracted even greater attention following Ronaldo’s recent suggestion that the 2026–27 season could be his final campaign as a professional footballer. As a result, the football world is closely watching whether the veteran forward can achieve the historic milestone before bringing his playing career to an end.
Ronaldo went into Wednesday’s fixture with three goals from five appearances this season, giving him a scoring rate of 0.60 goals per game.
At that current rate, he would require approximately 35 more appearances to score the 21 goals needed to reach 1,000.
However, Ronaldo has plenty of potential opportunities ahead. Al Nassr are competing in the Saudi Pro League, King’s Cup and AFC Champions League Elite, while the forward could also represent Portugal in the UEFA Nations League.
With more than 40 potential matches available across club and international competitions, Ronaldo has a realistic opportunity to chase down the historic figure during the campaign.
The victory also strengthened Al Nassr’s position near the top of the Saudi Pro League table, with the club moving level with Al Hilal on 15 points.
At 41, Ronaldo’s pursuit of 1,000 career goals is rapidly becoming one of the biggest individual storylines in world football.
