ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has said that the economic and policy reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are laying the foundation for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity, urging Nigerians to support the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja by the Director-General of Friends of Tinubu Reforms (FTR), Agbor Ebipade, and members of the organization, who sought collaboration with the ministry to promote public awareness of government policies and programmes.
According to a statement issued by the minister’s Special Assistant, Rabiu Ibrahim, the delegation visited to formally introduce the organization and explore a partnership with the ministry to communicate the administration’s reforms to Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots.
Idris described the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market as major policy decisions intended to stabilize the economy and improve the country’s fiscal position.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda is designed to take Nigeria to greater prosperity. The removal of the fuel subsidy, one of President Tinubu’s major reforms, together with the unification of the foreign exchange, are two programs the president needed to implement to stabilize this country,” the minister said.
He recalled the financial difficulties previously experienced by some state governments, particularly in meeting their salary obligations, arguing that the reforms had contributed to a changed fiscal environment since Tinubu assumed office.
The minister also highlighted the administration’s interventions across key sectors, including education, agriculture, security and infrastructure. He cited the student loan scheme and major road construction projects as examples of government initiatives aimed at supporting national development.
FG Seeks Wider Public Understanding of Reforms
Idris stressed the importance of ensuring that Nigerians receive accurate and accessible information about government policies, their objectives and their anticipated benefits.
He noted that effective communication was essential to helping citizens understand the rationale behind policy decisions and participate meaningfully in the country’s development.
The minister welcomed the proposed partnership with Friends of Tinubu Reforms, explaining that government institutions could not communicate their programmes effectively without the support of civil society organizations, voluntary groups and other stakeholders.
“I thank you for putting together this compendium of reforms. Every part of this country deserves to know what this administration is doing. Government officials alone cannot communicate government programmes effectively,” Idris said.
He added that collaboration with groups such as FTR would help expand public engagement and ensure that information about government programmes reached communities across the country.
FTR Plans Grassroots Campaign on Renewed Hope Agenda
Earlier, Ebipade explained that Friends of Tinubu Reforms was established to promote the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and strengthen communication between the government and the Nigerian people.
He disclosed that the organization had compiled a document detailing the administration’s reforms, with plans to use it as an information resource to explain government policies and initiatives to citizens at the grassroots.
According to him, the initiative was designed to make information about the administration’s activities more accessible and encourage broader public awareness of its programmes.
“We put together this compendium because President Tinubu is working, and we need all Nigerians to see the good work that he is doing,” Ebipade said.
The FTR director-general also requested the minister’s support for the planned initiative, noting that cooperation with the Ministry of Information and National Orientation would strengthen the organization’s communication efforts.
Minister Invited to Serve as Grand Patron
During the visit, Ebipade invited Idris to serve as the Grand Patron of Friends of Tinubu Reforms, expressing confidence that his involvement would enhance the organization’s efforts to promote public understanding of the administration’s policies.
The minister welcomed the group’s initiative and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to communicating government policies and programmes in clear, accessible language.
The proposed collaboration comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government and pro-administration groups to explain the objectives of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms and encourage public engagement with its development agenda.
While the government maintains that the reforms are necessary to stabilize the economy and establish a foundation for sustainable growth, their long-term impact will continue to be assessed through economic performance, living standards and the extent to which Nigerians experience tangible improvements in their daily lives.
