Mozambique has fully repaid more than $630 million owed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), years ahead of schedule, in a move that could strengthen its position in securing new financial support.

At the beginning of March, the southern African nation still owed over $515 million in Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), the IMF’s unit of account. By the end of the month, however, that balance had dropped to zero—making Mozambique the only country among dozens to completely settle its IMF credit within that period.

The early repayment marks a significant shift for Mozambique, which had originally been expected to continue servicing the debt until 2029. Analysts say the move signals improved fiscal discipline and could enhance the country’s credibility with international lenders.

The development comes after an IMF programme approved in 2022 was suspended in 2025, following partial disbursement of funds. With its debt now cleared, Mozambique is believed to be in a stronger position to negotiate a new agreement with the Fund.

Discussions are already underway around a potential new programme aimed at supporting economic stability and deepening cooperation between Mozambique and the IMF. Although government officials have yet to issue a formal statement, the repayment is widely viewed as a critical step toward unlocking future financial assistance.

Despite this progress, Mozambique continues to face significant economic challenges. The country remains a low-income economy heavily reliant on agriculture, natural resources, and foreign investment. An estimated 60 to 65 percent of the population lives below the national poverty line, with higher rates in rural communities.

Still, the early debt clearance could mark a turning point, offering Mozambique a chance to reset its financial standing and pursue renewed international support on more favorable terms.
