The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed former Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille as the new UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, the global body announced in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the UN, Conille officially assumed office the same day, bringing with him more than two decades of experience in international development, humanitarian affairs, and public administration.
“Mr. Conille brings over 20 years of experience in international development, humanitarian affairs and public administration to the position, with a strong record of leadership across the United Nations system,” the statement read.
Conille, 60, has had a long-standing career within the United Nations since joining the organization in 1999. Over the years, he has held several high-level roles, including serving as Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He also previously served as UN Resident Coordinator in both Burundi and Jamaica between 2017 and 2022.

Beyond his UN career, Conille has played a significant role in Haitian politics. He first served as Haiti’s Prime Minister from 2011 to 2012. More recently, he returned to the position in 2024 under the country’s Transitional Presidential Council, which was tasked with restoring political stability amid ongoing unrest.
During his second tenure, Haiti saw the initial deployment of Kenyan-led security forces under a UN-backed mission aimed at addressing escalating gang violence and insecurity in the country. Conille was later succeeded by businessman Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, who currently serves as Haiti’s acting prime minister with full executive authority.

In his new role in Kenya, Conille is expected to lead and coordinate UN activities in the country, including overseeing the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework. His appointment comes at a time when Kenya continues to play a strategic role in regional peacekeeping and international development efforts.
The United Nations expressed confidence that Conille’s extensive experience and leadership across both national and international platforms will strengthen its mission and partnerships in Kenya.
