Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday appeared before the Kaduna State High Court as his ongoing trial by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) continued, further intensifying the legal challenges surrounding the ex-governor.

El-Rufai, who is standing trial alongside one Amadu Sule, faces multiple charges including abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage. The proceedings mark one of several legal battles he has been grappling with since his return to Nigeria earlier this year.

Shortly before entering the courtroom, the former governor was overheard discussing political developments, specifically the upcoming national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), scheduled for Tuesday.

“So tomorrow is our convention, right?” El-Rufai asked an associate, who responded, “Insha Allah (God willing).”

Beyond the state court case, El-Rufai is also facing a separate prosecution at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. In that case, also instituted by the ICPC, he is charged with a 10-count indictment bordering on alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud involving a total of ₦579.6 million and $1.1 million.

The former governor has consistently denied all allegations in both cases.

El-Rufai’s legal troubles date back to his return from Cairo, Egypt, on February 12, 2026. Upon arrival, he was initially detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before being transferred to the custody of the ICPC.

He was later granted temporary release on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial but subsequently returned to custody as investigations and prosecutions continued.

Meanwhile, the Federal High Court had earlier fixed April 14 for his bail hearing—a date that coincides with the ADC national convention, raising questions about his possible participation in the political gathering.

The unfolding situation has also taken on a political dimension. The ADC has alleged that the prosecution is politically motivated, suggesting that it is aimed at sidelining El-Rufai ahead of key political activities. However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has firmly rejected the claim, insisting that the legal process should be allowed to take its course without political interference.

As proceedings continue in both courts, attention remains fixed on the outcome of the bail hearing and the broader implications of the case for both El-Rufai’s political future and Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
