Nigerian singer and multiple Grammy Award winner, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shared her perspective on marriage, emphasizing that it should be rooted in growth and accountability rather than just emotions.
Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the award-winning artist explained that she views marriage as a serious commitment that goes beyond love and romance. According to her, people should approach it with the understanding that it will not always be smooth or perfect.

Tems noted that while love is important, it should not be the sole foundation of marriage. Instead, she believes compatibility and personal development are key factors that determine the success of a long-term relationship.
“Marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love—it’s about compatibility,” she said. “It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you.”
The singer also stressed that marriage inevitably comes with challenges, adding that individuals should be mentally prepared for difficult moments rather than expecting a constantly blissful experience.
Highlighting the qualities she desires in a partner, Tems revealed that being “God-fearing” is non-negotiable for her. She explained that accountability to a higher power plays a crucial role in sustaining commitment.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man,” she stated. “Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?”

She further argued that without such accountability, a person might act solely on personal desires, making long-term commitment uncertain.
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want,” she added.
Tems’ remarks have sparked conversations online, with many praising her candid and thoughtful outlook on relationships, while others continue to debate the role of faith, compatibility, and personal growth in modern marriage.
The singer’s perspective adds to ongoing discussions about evolving relationship values, particularly among young people navigating love, commitment, and personal development in today’s world.
