The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has inaugurated a General Court Martial (GCM) to try 36 serving military personnel over an alleged mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government, in what marks one of the most significant internal disciplinary actions within the Armed Forces in recent times.

The development follows an earlier statement issued by the DHQ on January 26, 2026, addressing concerns surrounding the alleged plot.

Announcing the inauguration, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the move underscores the military’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and the protection of Nigeria’s constitutional order.

“The inauguration marks a significant step in reinforcing discipline, accountability and the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding national integrity and constituted authority,” Uba stated.

He assured that proceedings of the court would adhere strictly to due process and established legal standards within the military justice system.

“Proceedings of the court will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness, impartiality and strict adherence to due process, guaranteeing that justice will be served without fear or favour. All cases will be addressed within the extant legal frameworks of the military justice system,” he added.

Uba further emphasized that the DHQ remains steadfast in upholding professionalism and the rule of law, while ensuring that the rights of the accused personnel are fully respected.

“The DHQ remains resolute in upholding professionalism, discipline and the rule of law while ensuring that the rights of all personnel are respected and the tenets of fair hearing upheld,” he said.

The General Court Martial is being held at the Scorpion Officers’ Mess and is presided over by Air Vice Marshal H.I. Alhaji. Lieutenant Colonel A. Mohammed is serving as the judge advocate.

Other members of the panel include Major Generals U.T. Opuene, I.B. Abubakar, N.U.C. Ogili, S.A. Emmanuel, and F.U. Mijinyawa; Rear Admirals D.M. Ndanusa and M.K. Igwe; as well as Air Vice Marshals M.A. Isah and A.O. Kotun. Air Vice Marshal M.M. Omar has been listed as a waiting member.

The trial is expected to draw significant attention, given the gravity of the allegations and their implications for national security and civil-military relations. Observers say the outcome could send a strong signal about the Armed Forces’ stance on discipline, loyalty, and adherence to constitutional authority.
