President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mourned the death of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organization’s leader, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, paying tribute to his contributions to Nigeria’s independence struggle, opposition to military rule and campaign for the restoration of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Tinubu described Fasoranti as an exemplary leader, genuine patriot, philanthropist and humanist whose life was defined by courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment to public service.

The Afenifere organization announced his passing in a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, who disclosed that the elder statesman died at about 4 p.m.

Fasoranti, popularly known as Asiwaju Yoruba, turned 100 on May 11, 2026, becoming the first leader of Afenifere to attain the age of 100.

According to the organisation, he assumed the leadership of the pan-Yoruba group in November 2008 following the death of his predecessor, Chief Abraham Adesanya, in August of the same year.

In its tribute, Afenifere described the late leader as “a humanist, a philanthropist, an exemplary leader, a genuine patriot and a Yoruba leader and an icon,” adding that he remained a model of courage even in the most difficult circumstances.

The organisation said Fasoranti followed in the footsteps of his predecessors by living a life worthy of emulation, noting that his principles and conduct offered valuable lessons for individuals, political organisations and future generations.

Fasoranti’s Role in Nigeria’s Independence Struggle

Afenifere recalled that Fasoranti was among the frontline followers of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the Action Group’s struggle for Nigeria’s independence.

His involvement in progressive politics continued after independence, spanning decades of political developments and major turning points in the country’s history.

The organisation noted that Fasoranti’s lifetime covered Nigeria’s colonial era, independence, the Civil War, successive military administrations and the eventual return to democratic governance.

His political career was marked by a consistent commitment to democratic principles and the belief that Nigerians should have the right to determine their political leadership through credible elections.

Afenifere particularly highlighted his active involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which played a prominent role in the struggle for the restoration of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The election was annulled by the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, triggering widespread protests and a prolonged pro-democracy campaign across the country.

According to Afenifere, Fasoranti remained committed to efforts aimed at restoring civilian rule whenever the military intervened in Nigeria’s political process.

The organisation consequently described him as “a democrat par excellence,” acknowledging his contributions to the struggle for democracy and constitutional governance.

Believed in Leadership as Service to the People

Afenifere also drew parallels between Fasoranti and his political mentor, Awolowo, as well as his predecessors as leader of the organisation, the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin and Chief Abraham Adesanya.

It said they shared the conviction that public office should be used to advance the welfare and interests of the people rather than serve personal or political ambitions.

The organisation described Fasoranti as an unassuming progressive leader whose commitment to humanity and public service remained central to his political philosophy.

His leadership, it added, reflected the ideals of integrity, accountability and selfless service that have historically shaped Afenifere’s political tradition.

Beyond his participation in political movements, Fasoranti was recognised for his contributions to education and community development.

Educationist and Former Ondo Finance Commissioner

The late elder statesman established Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Igoba, Akure, Ondo State, reflecting his commitment to expanding access to education.

His work in the education sector complemented his involvement in public administration and progressive politics.

Between 1979 and 1983, he served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under the administration of the late Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.

During his years in public service, Fasoranti remained associated with the progressive political tradition championed by Awolowo and other prominent Yoruba leaders.

Afenifere said his contributions extended beyond political activities, noting that his philanthropy, humanism and dedication to the advancement of society distinguished him as a leader whose influence reached different generations.

Afenifere Pays Tribute to an Enduring Legacy

In expressing its grief, Afenifere said it would deeply miss the late leader, describing him as a humble and committed progressive whose life exemplified service to humanity.

The organisation stated that it would “sorely miss this exemplary, unassuming, progressive icon who was a humanist and philanthropist in every sense of it”.

It extended its condolences to Fasoranti’s immediate and extended families, the Ondo State Government and people, members of the Afenifere family in Nigeria and the diaspora, the Yoruba people worldwide and Nigerians in general.

The organisation also noted that Nigeria occupied a special place in the heart of the deceased, whose lifelong engagements reflected his desire for a democratic, just and prosperous country.

Fasoranti’s passing marks the end of an era for Afenifere and Nigeria’s progressive political movement. His decades of involvement in the independence struggle, pro-democracy activism, education and public administration leave behind a legacy that the organisation believes will continue to inspire future generations.

For Afenifere, his life stands as a testament to the enduring value of patriotism, courage, philanthropy and leadership devoted to the common good.
