The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions across Nigeria against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that the responsibility for issuing official admission letters rests with the board.

The registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, which paid him a courtesy visit at his office.

According to the registrar, JAMB is the only body statutorily empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions in the country, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

Prof. Aina expressed concern over the practice of some institutions issuing admission documents that could mislead candidates into believing they had secured valid admission.

He noted that candidates often trust documents bearing the names of institutions that claim to have offered them admission, without necessarily verifying whether the admission has been properly processed and approved through the appropriate channel.

The registrar, therefore, urged institutions engaging in the practice to desist, stressing that they also have a responsibility to ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate admission documents from JAMB.

He further recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed that admissions into tertiary institutions be conducted through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), the platform established to manage and process admissions.

Prof. Aina maintained that any admission process conducted outside the approved framework was illegal and invalid, in line with the directive cited by the registrar.

He also emphasized that institutions must not substitute their own admission letters for the official JAMB admission letter, which is issued after a candidate has accepted an admission offer on CAPS.

The registrar added that admission processed and recognized through the approved platform is essential for official purposes, including mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The warning underscores the importance of candidates verifying their admission status through the appropriate JAMB channels and ensuring that their admission has been properly processed before proceeding with registration and other formalities.

Prospective students are advised to confirm their admission status on CAPS and obtain the relevant official documents to avoid complications that could affect their academic records or eligibility for subsequent processes.

JAMB’s position also places renewed emphasis on compliance by tertiary institutions with the country’s approved admission procedures, with the aim of promoting transparency and protecting candidates from potentially misleading admission claims.
