Veteran Nigerian filmmaker and producer, Wale Adenuga, has broken his silence over the growing controversy surrounding the iconic comedy series Papa Ajasco and Company.

This comes after actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known for his role as Papa Ajasco, claimed in a recent interview that the character’s trademark limited his opportunities outside the long-running show.

In a strong rebuttal, Adenuga dismissed the allegations as “entirely false and misleading,” defending the integrity of his production company, Wale Adenuga Productions.

Reacting to the viral interview, Adenuga expressed surprise, saying his initial thought was that Ayoyinka had simply taken advantage of the character’s popularity on social media.

“I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked,” Adenuga said.

However, he emphasized that the Papa Ajasco brand is legally protected, making it necessary for Ayoyinka to seek approval before using the character commercially.

“He cannot use the copyrighted brand name Papa Ajasco for personal ventures… it is our duty to protect the brand,” he stated.

Adenuga also clarified that the actor is not restricted from pursuing other jobs, including advertisements, as long as proper authorization is obtained.

Addressing claims of financial hardship, the veteran producer questioned Ayoyinka’s assertions, noting that the actor is a retired civil servant who spent over three decades with the Lagos State Government.

He further revealed that Ayoyinka had received several benefits over the years, including cars and other support from the production company.

“Why is he claiming to be broke? What happened to his gratuities and investments?” Adenuga asked.

The filmmaker also pointed out that cast members, including Pa James and others, continue to take on independent roles outside the show.

Explaining the production schedule, Adenuga said actors typically spend only about six weeks per year on set, during which enough episodes are produced to last an entire year—leaving them with ample time for other ventures.

He concluded by reaffirming the company’s reputation for professionalism and timely payment.

“Any narrative suggesting financial abandonment or exploitation by our organization is entirely false and misleading,” he said.
