JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has temporarily withdrawn from public engagements after returning from the BRICS summit in India, with the Presidency saying he is taking time to rest and recover following medical advice.
Ramaphosa, 73, returned to South Africa on Monday after attending the two-day BRICS summit in New Delhi, where leaders of the bloc discussed issues including inclusive global economic growth and the situation in the Middle East.
According to a statement from the Presidency on Wednesday, the President’s doctors have advised him to rest and recover.
“Where possible, the president has asked the respective ministers to represent him at scheduled engagements,” the Presidency said.
Ramaphosa’s temporary absence comes as Deputy President Paul Mashatile is also recovering from a minor medical procedure, meaning South Africa’s two highest-ranking political leaders are currently away from their normal public duties.
Mashatile provided an update on his condition on Tuesday, saying his recovery was progressing well.
“My recovery is progressing well and I am regaining strength each day,” Mashatile said.

He added that, on the advice of his doctors, he would continue resting until he received further medical guidance.
“Work and delegated responsibilities continue to be underway in the capable team in my office with other stakeholders in government, business and other sectors,” the Deputy President said.
The simultaneous absence of the President and Deputy President comes at a politically significant period for South Africa, with the country preparing for local government elections scheduled for November 4.
Ramaphosa’s office has not indicated how long the President is expected to remain away from public engagements.
Government ministers are expected to represent him at engagements where necessary while he follows his doctors’ advice and recuperates.
