Long before Nnamdi Azikiwe became Nigeria’s first President, he was a journalist, writer, educator and nationalist whose life was closely connected to the emergence of modern Nigerian nationalism.
Born in Zungeru in 1904, Azikiwe was educated in Nigeria and later in the United States. In 1937, he founded the West African Pilot, a newspaper that became an important platform during the nationalist period. He subsequently moved into politics, serving in legislative positions and later as Premier of the Eastern Region, Governor-General and, from 1963 to 1966, President of Nigeria.
Known popularly as “Zik of Africa,” Azikiwe remains an important figure in Nigeria’s political and media history. His career brought together journalism, education, nationalism and public service at a pivotal period in the country’s development.
Now, His Story Comes to Life on “The Profile”
Cruise TV News is taking audiences beyond the familiar name and official titles with “The Profile”—a documentary series dedicated to telling the stories of notable personalities whose lives, work and contributions have formed part of Nigeria’s history.
