The University of Ibadan (UI) has introduced new guidelines governing the collection of Statements of Result and academic certificates by its graduates, including financial penalties for delayed collection and the shredding of certificates that remain unclaimed for more than 10 years.
The new guidelines were contained in a special bulletin dated September 15, 2026, and signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr Ganiyu Saliu.
Under the new rules, graduates are required to collect their Statements of Result within six months of being notified that the documents are ready.
The university said graduates who fail to collect their Statements of Result within the stipulated six-month period will be required to pay a ₦2,500 non-collection penalty before the document can be released.

According to the institution, Statements of Result will remain valid for two years from their respective dates of issuance and will serve as interim evidence of graduation pending the collection of the official certificate.
UI advised graduates to ensure that their certificates are collected within the validity period of their Statements of Result.
The university further stated that certificates would be available for collection from the date of convocation until one year after the convocation.

During the initial one-year period, graduates will pay a ₦7,500 statutory fee for the issuance and collection of their certificates.
However, graduates who delay collection beyond the first year will be required to pay additional non-collection penalties.
Under the new fee structure, graduates collecting their certificates after one year but within five years will pay a ₦25,000 non-collection penalty.
Those collecting their certificates after five years but within 10 years will pay a ₦50,000 non-collection penalty.
The university stressed that these penalties are separate from the ₦7,500 statutory certificate issuance and collection fee.
In a significant warning, the institution said certificates that remain uncollected for more than 10 years would be liable to shredding.

The university therefore urged graduates and other relevant stakeholders to take note of the new guidelines and comply with the stipulated requirements to avoid additional financial charges or the possible loss of unclaimed certificates.
UI also reiterated that while Statements of Result serve as interim records of graduation, the certificate remains the university’s official and permanent evidence of graduation and qualification.
