The Benue State Police Command has brought together political party leaders, candidates, representatives of sister security agencies and other key stakeholders to sign a Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative, held in Makurdi on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, was aimed at promoting peaceful political activities and strengthening security before, during and after the elections.
The engagement provided an opportunity for political actors and security stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to peaceful campaigns, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of lives and property throughout the electoral period.
Addressing participants, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, urged political party leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly.
The Commissioner warned political actors against recruiting or using political thugs, cult groups or other criminal elements to intimidate opponents, disrupt campaigns or undermine the electoral process.

He also called on candidates and their supporters to respect the rights of other political actors and resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means rather than resorting to violence.
According to Nwadiogbu, the Peace Accord represents an important commitment by participating political parties and candidates to maintaining a peaceful electoral environment across Benue State.
The participating political parties and candidates subsequently signed the accord, signifying their commitment to rejecting political violence, respecting the rights of fellow contestants and cooperating with security agencies throughout the electoral process.

Nwadiogbu assured political parties and candidates that the Police Command would remain professional and impartial while providing security for all lawful political activities.
He further urged political stakeholders to maintain effective communication with the Police and other security agencies, particularly when planning rallies, campaigns and other major political events.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of providing security agencies with adequate information about planned political activities to facilitate effective security arrangements and prevent avoidable incidents.
The Police Command also called on political party supporters, candidates and members of the public to uphold the spirit of the Peace Accord and refrain from actions capable of threatening public peace.
Nwadiogbu urged all stakeholders to work collectively towards ensuring peaceful, orderly and credible political activities in Benue State as the country moves towards the 2027 general elections.
