A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwasegun, has reportedly died in an incident suspected to be suicide.
Oluwasegun, a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, reportedly died on Tuesday afternoon at his off-campus residence around the Damico area of Ooni Layout in Ile-Ife.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun.

According to Abiodun, the university management was informed of the incident in the afternoon, following which its Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team immediately proceeded to the location.
He said the Nigeria Police was contacted, with officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joining university security personnel at the scene.
The deceased was subsequently taken to the University Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
Abiodun said the university was deeply concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and had handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene over to the police for further investigation.
The police have since commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The university also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities for necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students affected by the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.

The university management also urged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted individuals and appropriate university support structures.
The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the welfare of staff and students, stressing that no student should feel compelled to face overwhelming difficulties alone.
The circumstances surrounding Oluwasegun’s death remain under police investigation.
