KANO — Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abacha’s candidacy was formally affirmed on Wednesday evening by PDP stakeholders from across the state during a stakeholders’ meeting held at Nima Guest Palace in Kano.

The meeting was witnessed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the Kano State PDP Chairman, Bello Gambo Bichi, said the affirmation followed the resignation of the party’s previously elected governorship candidate, Mohammed Bello Dalhatu.

According to Bichi, extensive consultations were held among PDP stakeholders in Kano as well as with the party’s national leadership in Abuja before Abacha was selected and subsequently affirmed as the party’s new flag-bearer.

He said the process began from the ward level and progressed through the local government structures before receiving approval from the relevant leadership organs of the party.

“The affirmation began at the ward level, at the local government level and by all the relevant leadership structures of our great party,” Bichi said.

The PDP chairman further stated that the replacement process was carried out in accordance with applicable electoral provisions, noting that the Electoral Act provides mechanisms for replacing a candidate who withdraws before an election.

Abacha is not new to the Kano governorship contest. He previously contested the governorship election in the state in the last three general elections.

Also affirmed alongside Abacha was his running mate, Yusuf Ado Kibiya, as well as some candidates for the state and National Assembly.

Kibiya’s selection reportedly followed consultations involving different factions within the Kano PDP, with party stakeholders describing the move as part of efforts to strengthen internal unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

The party leadership said the emergence of Abacha and Kibiya had further energised the PDP’s preparations for the forthcoming elections.

The development is expected to reshape the political contest in Kano State as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
