WASHINGTON, D.C. — Three major United States news organizations — CNN, Politico and MS NOW — have taken legal action against President Donald Trump’s administration after their journalists were barred from the White House.
The media organizations filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C., on Monday, accusing the administration of violating their constitutional rights by revoking their journalists’ access to the White House following disputes over their reporting.
The lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the increasingly tense relationship between the Trump administration and several major American news organizations.
In a joint statement announcing the legal action, CNN, Politico and MS NOW said they were seeking to protect their First Amendment rights and challenge what they described as government interference in independent journalism.

The organizations argued that their press credentials were revoked without prior notice or due process because the White House objected to their reporting.
“Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting,” the outlets said in their joint statement.
They further argued that leaving the decision unchallenged could have wider implications for press freedom and the public’s access to independent reporting.

Trump Defends Decision
President Trump has defended the ban, accusing CNN, MS NOW and Politico of repeatedly publishing what he described as “fake news,” “fiction” and “lies” about his administration.
Trump announced the ban on Truth Social last Friday, saying the outlets would no longer be allowed access to the White House. He also suggested that other media organizations could face similar action.
Trump later named The New York Times and The Washington Post when asked which other outlets could potentially be targeted.
The White House has maintained that the decision was aimed at media organizations it believes have engaged in inaccurate or unfair reporting.
Reporters Denied Entry
The dispute moved from social media to the White House grounds on Saturday, when journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied entry.
Reporters had their White House credentials revoked or confiscated, preventing them from accessing areas where journalists normally work and cover presidential activities.

The three organizations have argued that the action was retaliation for their coverage rather than a neutral decision concerning security or access.
The case now places the dispute before the US courts, where judges will have to consider the constitutional and due-process issues raised by the media organizations.
First Amendment at the Centre of Dispute
At the heart of the lawsuit is the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which protects freedom of the press and prohibits the government from abridging freedom of speech and the press.

CNN Loses White House TV Pool Assignment
The dispute has also affected presidential television coverage.
CNN had been scheduled to provide pooled television coverage of Trump’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. However, following the ban, the usual television pool arrangement was disrupted.
The White House press pool traditionally allows a limited number of news organizations to cover presidential events and share footage with other media organizations, helping overcome limitations involving space, equipment and cost.
The latest dispute has raised questions about how future presidential events will be covered if major news organizations are excluded from the pool.
Wider Battle Between Trump and the Media
The lawsuit is the latest chapter in Trump’s longstanding confrontations with major US news organizations.
Earlier in his administration, the White House restricted access for Associated Press journalists following a dispute over the administration’s preferred terminology for the Gulf of Mexico. The AP subsequently challenged the restrictions in court, and that legal battle remains ongoing.
Trump’s administration has also been involved in legal disputes with other major media organizations, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC.
The latest case involving CNN, Politico and MS NOW could therefore become another major legal test over the relationship between the presidency and the American press.
For now, the three organizations say they intend to continue reporting while challenging the White House decision in court.
The White House has been asked for comment on the lawsuit.
