Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2027 presidential campaign under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi previously supported Atiku’s presidential ambitions.
Okonkwo made the claim during a recent press briefing while discussing the political aspirations of Atiku, Tinubu and Obi ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, Tinubu endorsed Atiku’s presidential bid in 2007, while Obi backed the former vice president during the 2019 presidential election.
Okonkwo argued that Atiku stands out among the three politicians because he has, at different points, received the support of both Tinubu and Obi.

“Bola Tinubu endorsed Atiku to be president in 2007. Peter Obi endorsed Atiku to be president in 2019,” Okonkwo said.
He added: “Two out of the three of them, Atiku is the only person who has been endorsed by the other two. So, if the other two believe that he is the best, what are you looking for?”
“They know themselves, but they don’t know themselves more than you and I,” he stated.

The remarks come as Nigeria’s political landscape increasingly begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with major opposition figures exploring possible alliances and platforms to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku, a former vice president and serial presidential contender, is seeking another opportunity to contest for the presidency, this time under the ADC platform.
Tinubu, who defeated Atiku and Obi in the 2023 presidential election, is expected to seek re-election in 2027, while Obi has also indicated his continued interest in the presidency.
The possibility of opposition cooperation and the alignment of major political figures is expected to remain a major issue in Nigeria’s political discourse as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
