No fewer than 52 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly Monday morning attack by bandits on Bagna community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, in what residents have described as one of the most devastating assaults in recent times.
The victims include 42 members of a joint security task force, six local vigilantes, and four civilians. At least 20 others are currently receiving treatment for gunshot injuries at various government health facilities.
A source within the community revealed that many of the bodies were recovered from surrounding bushes days after the attack, while others died in hospital. The bandits reportedly set ablaze a security camp during the invasion, overwhelming operatives with superior numbers and firepower.
“Up till Wednesday morning, more bodies were still being recovered from nearby bushes. This attack was massive; the bandits came well prepared and in large numbers,” the source said.

The aftermath of the attack has left Bagna and neighbouring communities completely deserted, with residents fleeing for safety. Security personnel are currently combing the forests in search of missing colleagues.
Emerging details suggest that the attack may have been a revenge mission. According to sources familiar with security developments in the area, the assailants were angered over the seizure of cattle and sheep belonging to a bandit group linked to a late warlord, Mallam Kachala.
Although some of the livestock were reportedly returned following intervention by local authorities, several animals remained unaccounted for, a development believed to have triggered the deadly reprisal.

“For almost a year, the area had enjoyed relative peace. But tensions resurfaced after some seized animals went missing. It appears groups loyal to Dogo Jede and the Kachala faction coordinated this attack,” the source added.
Meanwhile, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has condemned the attack, describing it as heinous and a major setback in the fight against insecurity.
In a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor expressed deep sympathy with the victims and affected communities.
“These renewed attacks are heart-wrenching. I share in the pain and losses of the people of Shiroro and assure them that they are not alone,” the governor said.
The incident underscores growing concerns over recurring cycles of violence and reprisal attacks in parts of northern Nigeria, as communities continue to grapple with insecurity and displacement.
