Suspected terrorists launched a deadly attack on Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the early hours of Easter Sunday, killing at least seven people and abducting several others during church services.
The attackers, said to be heavily armed, stormed the community in large numbers and targeted worshippers at two churches—ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church—where residents had gathered to celebrate Easter.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailants surrounded the area before opening fire indiscriminately on congregants, leaving several dead and many others injured. Some worshippers were reportedly forcefully taken into the bush by the attackers.
The councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, confirmed the incident, noting that the exact number of casualties was still being verified.
“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa said.
He added that the attackers operated for an extended period without resistance, raising serious concerns about the safety of rural communities in the area.

Residents also blamed poor telecommunications networks for delaying distress calls and hindering a swift security response.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the attack.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing communities in parts of Kaduna State, particularly during major religious celebrations.
