A 55-year-old motorist narrowly escaped death on Friday morning after a moving train crushed his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged but recording no casualties.

The incident involved a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed that the agency’s operatives, alongside security personnel, swiftly responded to the scene and rescued the driver unharmed.

Although the collision caused significant damage to the vehicle, no loss of life was recorded. Following the incident, the wreckage was removed from the railway tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey towards Agege.

However, the collision triggered traffic congestion around the PWD axis, disrupting vehicular movement along the busy Lagos route as motorists experienced delays.

Taofiq explained that the damaged Honda car was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency’s operatives and security personnel for their prompt response and coordinated efforts in rescuing the motorist and clearing the railway tracks.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings, warning them against attempting to cross the tracks when a train is approaching or already in motion.

He emphasised that strict compliance with railway safety regulations and traffic instructions remains essential to preventing avoidable accidents and protecting lives.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with railway crossings and the importance of motorists remaining vigilant around active train tracks.

Motorists are advised to stop, observe safety warnings and ensure that the tracks are clear before crossing, as trains require considerable distance to stop once in motion.

Although the driver escaped without injuries, the extensive damage to the vehicle serves as a reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of disregarding railway safety precautions.
