A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died under circumstances being investigated by the Edo State Police Command.
Uwuigbe reportedly lodged at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where he allegedly engaged the services of a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
According to the police, the lecturer later asked the woman to leave the room to purchase water for him.
However, upon her return, she reportedly found Uwuigbe lying motionless in the hotel room.
The incident was said to have occurred on October 5, 2026, at about 8 p.m.
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the command received a report concerning the death of the university lecturer.
She said, “On October 5, 2026, at about 8 pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.
“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room.”
Following the incident, police arrested the hotel owner, the manager and the woman who was reportedly with the deceased at the time.
The three suspects are currently being detained as detectives continue investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death, and it remains unclear whether any criminal act was involved.
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary for further examination.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to establish what happened inside the hotel room before the lecturer’s death.
