The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have renewed efforts to address regulatory, technical and operational challenges affecting electricity supply in Lagos State.

The development followed a Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), hosted by the Lagos State Government, where key stakeholders agreed on measures aimed at improving electricity supply across the state.

Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, announced the establishment of a steering committee comprising relevant stakeholders in the power sector to coordinate the implementation of decisions reached at the retreat.

According to the minister, the committee will ensure that resolutions from the meeting are translated into concrete improvements for residents, businesses and industries across Lagos.

Tegbe said the retreat was designed to identify practical interventions to address immediate electricity supply challenges while also developing longer-term strategies to strengthen the state’s electricity market.

He identified regulatory issues, as well as technical and operational constraints, as major areas requiring coordinated action between federal and state authorities.

The minister stressed that Lagos’ strategic position as Nigeria’s major commercial hub makes collaboration between the Federal Government, Lagos State and other power sector stakeholders critical to achieving a more reliable electricity system.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with Lagos State and other stakeholders to expand access to reliable electricity, support economic growth and improve the quality of life of residents.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the discussions as frank and productive, saying the retreat provided an opportunity for stakeholders to confront longstanding challenges in the electricity sector and agree on practical solutions.

The governor welcomed the participation of key institutions, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Sanwo-Olu stressed that the success of the Clean Lagos Electricity Market must ultimately be measured by its impact on electricity consumers.

He said decisions reached at the retreat must translate into tangible improvements in power supply to homes, businesses and industries across Lagos.

The governor added that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building a more reliable and sustainable electricity system, with Lagos expected to play a leading role in advancing reforms within Nigeria’s evolving electricity market.

The establishment of the steering committee is expected to provide a coordinated framework for implementing the agreed reforms and monitoring progress towards improved electricity supply across Lagos State.
