Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he will resign his position if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu loses the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.

Wike made the declaration on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, while addressing members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja. He said his political performance in the FCT should be reflected in electoral support for Tinubu, while describing Rivers State as his home state.

The former Rivers State governor said political support for Tinubu in the FCT cuts across party lines, describing the arrangement as a “rainbow coalition.” According to Wike, some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are also supporting the President ahead of the 2027 election.

“You see, FCT is where I work. Rivers State is my state, right? And if I cannot deliver where I work, then I am not worthy to be here,” Wike said.

‘I’ll resign on January 17’

Wike said he would personally accept responsibility if Tinubu fails to secure victory in the two territories.

He specifically tied his continued stay as FCT Minister to the election outcome, saying that losing the FCT would raise questions about his performance in office.

“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister,” he said.

Wike then gave a specific date for his proposed resignation.

“The presidential election is on January 16, 2027. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.”

Multi-party coalition for 2027

During the engagement, Wike also spoke about efforts to build a cross-party political coalition in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections.

He reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s presidential bid and identified candidates his political camp intends to support for legislative positions in the FCT. He said the coalition would operate across party lines.

“For the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu!” Wike said, while also announcing support for candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives.

Wike’s declaration comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to reports citing the electoral timetable.

For Wike, however, the political contest now carries a personal consequence: he has publicly stated that a Tinubu defeat in both Rivers State and the FCT would trigger his resignation as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
