Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York following his conviction for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
The sentence was handed down after Haley addressed the court, describing the lasting psychological and emotional impact of the assault and the difficulties she faced while seeking justice.
“Being sexually assaulted by Harvey Weinstein has had a devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away,” Haley told the court.
She also spoke about the fear and scrutiny she continued to experience after speaking publicly about the assault, describing its impact as a lifelong burden.
“It’s a life sentence for me,” she said.
Weinstein, 74, maintained his innocence while asking the judge for leniency. He expressed remorse for the pain Haley had experienced but continued to deny committing the offence.
“I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence,” he told the judge.
His latest sentence follows years of legal proceedings. In 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting Haley and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann. However, New York’s highest court overturned the convictions in 2024, ruling that the original trial had been prejudiced by the admission of testimony from other women whose allegations were not part of the charges.
Prosecutors subsequently dropped the unresolved rape charge after a further trial ended in a deadlock, clearing the way for the latest sentencing.
Weinstein also faces a separate 16-year prison sentence in California, following his conviction for rape and sexual assault in Los Angeles in 2022.
The New York sentence adds to the legal consequences of allegations against the former film executive, whose downfall became a defining part of the #MeToo movement, which brought widespread attention to sexual abuse and misconduct in the entertainment industry.
