ABUJA — The Federal Government has ruled out any immediate increase in electricity tariffs, assuring Nigerians that improving power supply and service delivery remains a priority.
Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, gave the assurance while addressing concerns over reports of a possible increase in electricity tariffs.
Tegbe said the government was focused on improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution while working to ensure that consumers receive better and more reliable service.
The minister stressed that there were no immediate plans to increase electricity tariffs, saying the government was determined to address the structural challenges in the power sector without placing additional financial pressure on consumers at this time.

His comments come amid growing public concern over the future of electricity subsidies. In a separate statement reported earlier in September, Tegbe indicated that the Federal Government intends to phase out power-sector subsidies from 2027, while addressing legacy debts and developing a more sustainable financing structure for the sector.
The minister has also highlighted efforts to improve electricity supply, including investments in grid infrastructure, metering and renewable-energy projects.

The Federal Ministry of Power says its broader objective is to strengthen the electricity value chain and deliver more dependable power to homes, businesses and public institutions across Nigeria.
For now, the government’s position is that the planned reforms should not be interpreted as an immediate electricity tariff hike, although the future of power-sector subsidies remains part of the government’s broader reform agenda.
