At least two people have been killed and six others injured following what Russian authorities described as a “massive” overnight Ukrainian drone attack on the Moscow region.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyev said on Sunday that Russian air defences had intercepted and destroyed hundreds of drones during the attack.
Vorobyev reported that a 44-year-old woman was killed in Sofyino after a drone struck a three-storey residential building. Five other people, including two children, were injured in the incident.
In the Orekhovo-Zuevo district, an elderly man was also killed after a drone struck a private residence, according to the governor.

The attacks reportedly triggered fires at several residential buildings, while a warehouse was also set ablaze.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said a drone struck a building near one of the capital’s boulevards, while a facility at an oil refinery was damaged.
Sobyanin said about 450 drones heading towards Moscow had been shot down, describing the assault as an “unprecedented attack”. The figures reported by the Moscow mayor and the regional governor could not immediately be independently verified.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly show explosions lighting up the night sky over the Moscow region, as well as a burning warehouse. The footage has not been independently verified.
The drone strikes also disrupted air travel. Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport and Vnukovo Airport introduced temporary restrictions, with Vnukovo temporarily suspending all arrivals and departures. The restrictions were lifted by Sunday morning, although passengers were warned that some flights could remain delayed.
Deadly Russian Strikes Reported in Ukraine
The overnight attacks came after Ukrainian authorities reported that at least seven people, including two children, had been killed in Russian strikes on the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday.
In Fastiv, in the Kyiv region, regional head Tymur Tkachenko said a mother and her two young children — a boy and a girl — were killed during a Russian attack. Several private homes were also reportedly damaged.
In the north-eastern Sumy region, four people were killed when a Russian drone struck the vehicle in which they were travelling, according to regional official Oleh Hryhorov.

The latest attacks come amid a renewed escalation in Russian and Ukrainian strikes, with both sides targeting energy infrastructure, transport facilities and major logistics hubs.
Russia and Ukraine have continued to conduct attacks on energy infrastructure in recent days, despite US President Donald Trump saying that the two countries had agreed to stop such attacks.
The conflict has continued since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
