Three individuals have been arrested after allegedly gaining unauthorised access to a seagoing vessel in Lagos in an apparent attempt to travel illegally by sea.
Their presence was discovered after the vessel had commenced its voyage, prompting the intervention of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT. The suspects were subsequently arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for further investigation.
Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Adams-Aliu, said the incident underscored the dangers associated with unauthorised access to commercial vessels, particularly by individuals attempting to embark on irregular migration by sea.
He warned that people who conceal themselves aboard vessels could be exposed to life-threatening conditions, while their actions could also pose significant safety and security risks to the vessels, crew members and other maritime personnel.
Adams-Aliu urged parents, guardians and other authority figures to discourage young people from engaging in such dangerous acts and to educate them about the risks associated with irregular migration by sea.

According to him, the consequences extend beyond individual safety, as unauthorised access to commercial vessels could have broader implications for maritime safety and security across the West African sub-region.
The commander reaffirmed NNS BEECROFT’s commitment to supporting the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, in maintaining a motivated and professional naval force capable of protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests.
He added that the naval formation would continue to participate in joint operations aimed at defending national sovereignty and maintaining internal stability.
The operation further highlights the role of maritime security agencies in monitoring Nigeria’s waterways and preventing unauthorised access to commercial vessels.
The cooperation between the Nigerian Navy and the Nigeria Immigration Service is expected to strengthen efforts to tackle irregular migration while helping to maintain a safe and secure maritime environment for legitimate commercial activities.
