Abuja — Delegates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Tuesday gathered at the Rainbow Event Centre, Garki, Abuja, for the party’s national convention, amid claims of political interference and difficulties in securing a venue.

More than 3,000 delegates, adorned in colourful attires and party insignia, attended the convention in a vibrant atmosphere, as tight security measures were enforced at the venue. Security personnel conducted thorough screening of participants, while accreditation was overseen by a sub-committee chaired by Austin Akobundu.

Speaking at the event, the ADC National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, revealed that delegate allocation was based on the size of each state to ensure fair representation in the convention’s proceedings.

However, Idigo expressed concern over what he described as deliberate obstacles faced by the party in securing a suitable venue. According to him, several requests to use prominent locations, including the Eagle Square and the Velodrome at the National Stadium, were either ignored or declined without explanation.

He further alleged that private business owners, including hotels and event centres, refused to host the party due to fear of external pressure and possible repercussions.

“We approached several venues, but once they realised it was ADC, they declined. Even this Rainbow Event Centre initially attempted to cancel after alleged threats, but we insisted on proceeding since payments had already been made,” Idigo said.

He warned that such developments could negatively impact private businesses, stressing the need for an environment where operators can function without intimidation.

The convention is expected to conclude the party’s congresses, ratify a new constitution, and lay the groundwork for its forthcoming primaries.

Despite the challenges, the party proceeded with its activities, marking a significant step in its preparations ahead of future electoral contests.
