President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday directed Nigeria’s top security chiefs and the Minister of Defence to immediately go after those responsible for the recent killings in Plateau State, while also announcing a major security intervention involving the deployment of 5,000 surveillance cameras across the state.
The President gave the directive during a town hall meeting with stakeholders in Jos, following his visit to commiserate with the government and people of Plateau over the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, which claimed more than 28 lives.
Condemning the incident in strong terms, Tinubu stressed that his administration was committed to protecting lives and restoring peace. “I was elected not to create widows and widowers,” he said, assuring residents that decisive action would be taken to end the cycle of violence.
As part of immediate measures to strengthen security, the President disclosed that the Federal Government would deploy 5,000 security cameras to enhance intelligence gathering, improve surveillance, and enable rapid response to threats across the state.

Earlier, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang welcomed the President, noting that the visit came at a time when the state had begun to enjoy relative peace and was attracting both local and foreign investments prior to the latest attack. He described the incident as a temporary setback but expressed optimism that, with federal support and the efforts of security agencies, lasting peace would be restored.
Mutfwang also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of security operatives, stating that many attacks had been foiled without public awareness. He revealed that a recent State Security Council meeting had produced far-reaching decisions aimed at tackling insecurity.

Reflecting on the state’s long-standing challenges, the governor noted that insecurity had persisted for nearly three decades across successive administrations but added that Tinubu’s leadership had created a renewed platform for unity among Plateau leaders.
In his remarks, former Governor Jonah Jang called for a follow-up meeting with the President in Abuja to discuss lasting solutions to the crisis. He also cautioned against attempts by some elements to undermine upcoming elections, expressing confidence that continued sensitisation efforts would yield positive results.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by Senator Simon Lalong and the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, as stakeholders reiterated the need for collective action to restore Plateau’s reputation as a peaceful and tourist-friendly state.
