Former Kano State Governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
Kwankwaso formalized his membership on Monday at a well-attended event held at Gidan Kwankwasiyya along Miller Road in Bompai, Kano. During the ceremony, he was presented with his ADC membership card, signaling the end of his affiliation with the NNPP, a party he had been closely associated with in recent years.
The occasion drew a host of prominent political figures from across the country, underscoring its national significance. Among those in attendance were former Senate President David Mark, ex-Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye, and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun.
While Kwankwaso has yet to publicly outline the reasons for his defection, political observers view the move as part of ongoing realignments ahead of future electoral contests. His entry into the ADC is expected to reshape alliances and potentially strengthen the party’s national outlook.
