Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from the party with immediate effect, signaling a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Kwankwaso announced his resignation in a statement on Sunday, describing the decision as a difficult but necessary step in response to evolving national political dynamics.
“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he stated.
The former NNPP National Leader and presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general elections said his exit was driven by the need for “strategic realignment” as the country moves toward a new political phase.

“As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” Kwankwaso said, adding that current developments in the nation require a repositioning to achieve meaningful change.
“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he added.
Kwankwaso expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the NNPP, including National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, and other key organs of the party, for their support during his time.

He also extended gratitude to members across all levels—from ward to state structures—as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their loyalty and commitment.
Despite his resignation, the former governor emphasized the importance of unity and continued collaboration in pursuit of national development.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he said.
Kwankwaso’s departure is expected to trigger fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with attention now turning to his next political move.
