Senate President Godswill Akpabio has confirmed full legislative and political support for the creation of Anioma State, signaling renewed momentum for one of Nigeria’s most long-standing state-creation agitations. The announcement was made on Wednesday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Conference held in Asaba, Delta State.
Akpabio said the administration of President Bola Tinubu remains committed to the initiative, describing the proposal as historically justified and aimed at promoting equity, administrative efficiency, and balanced regional development.
“If Anioma State is established, Asaba will serve as its capital, while Warri will continue as the capital of the residual Delta State,” the Senate President stated. He highlighted Warri’s existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government offices, major oil companies, and a stadium, as key advantages for its role as Delta’s capital.
The creation of Anioma State is being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, and has received continuous legislative attention. Akpabio noted that the proposal is among the top priorities of the 10th Senate and emphasized its potential socio-economic and administrative benefits, including decentralization and enhanced development for the region.

The conference was attended by governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States, along with political leaders and APC stakeholders from across the South-South region. Akpabio called for unity among the people of the region, urging collaboration to ensure the smooth realization of the initiative.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities,” Akpabio added.

While the announcement marks a significant political endorsement, constitutional processes for state creation — including legislative approval and local referendums — are still required before Anioma State can officially become a reality.
The move has sparked discussions across the South-South and Igbo-speaking communities about state restructuring and the quest for equitable representation and governance in Nigeria.
