Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while throwing her weight behind the party’s consensus method of candidate selection.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Obasanjo described consensus as a credible and strategic way for political parties to produce candidates capable of winning elections.
According to her, consensus should not be seen as a process that sidelines popular aspirants, but rather as one that reflects the will of the people and the political realities on ground.
“I do believe that consensus can bring the right candidates because consensus does not mean that leadership ignores the will of the people,” she said.
She explained that no serious political party would intentionally present an unpopular candidate who could weaken its chances at the polls, stressing that the ultimate goal of any party is victory.
Obasanjo added that the consensus system naturally favours aspirants with strong grassroots support and public acceptance, saying she believes the model could also work in her favour ahead of the Ogun governorship race.
The former senator, who represented Ogun Central, pointed to her experience in public service and connection with the people as factors that strengthen her position as a major contender for the APC ticket.
She also spoke on family support, noting that while she still values her parents, she does not need to seek approval for every political decision at this stage of her life.

“I am almost 60… I consider myself lucky to have both my mother and my father alive,” she said, adding that she is confident both parents would support her ambition.
Obasanjo recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, a move that has further intensified political conversations around the 2027 governorship contest in Ogun State.
Her declaration comes as the APC prepares for its national convention in Abuja, where the party is expected to adopt consensus in selecting its national leadership.
However, party officials have indicated that decisions on candidates for elective positions may still depend on political realities and local dynamics in different states.
