Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has arrived in the United Kingdom for a two-day state visit hosted by King Charles III—marking the first visit of its kind by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.
President Tinubu touched down at London Stansted Airport at approximately 4:00 pm UK time on Tuesday, according to images aired by Nigerian television outlets. His visit signals a renewed diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the UK, both of which share historical ties through the Commonwealth of Nations.
A major highlight of the trip will be a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle—one of Britain’s most iconic royal residences.
The visit also underscores the importance of the UK as a second home to a large Nigerian diaspora, further strengthening cultural and economic ties between both nations.
However, the trip comes against the backdrop of renewed security concerns in Nigeria. Just a day before Tinubu’s departure, the northeastern city of Maiduguri was rocked by coordinated explosions carried out by suspected suicide bombers. The attacks reportedly claimed 23 lives and left more than 100 people injured.
