Chief Ralph Obioha, a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition, NADECO, and prominent pro-democracy activist, has died at the age of 80.

Obioha died on Saturday, October 3, 2026. His death was announced by his son, Chima Obioha, on behalf of the family in Enugu.

In the statement, the family described Chief Obioha, the Okpuruisizuruoha II of Arondizuogu, as a beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather and friend whose kindness, strength, humour, generosity and devotion to his family would be deeply remembered.

Beyond his family, Obioha was widely known as a patriot, elder statesman, businessman and political leader whose public life spanned several decades and various sectors of Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development.

He played a prominent role in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle of the 1990s as a key member of NADECO. Reports also indicate that he helped lead the organisation’s activities from Canada and the United States during the struggle for the restoration of democracy and the June 12, 1993 presidential mandate.

Obioha also served as a member of the House of Representatives during the Second Republic and later founded the Justice Party, which participated in the 2003 presidential election.

In June 2026, months before his death, Obioha made headlines after declining a national honour announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said his decision was based on concerns about insecurity and the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, maintaining that accepting the honour would conflict with the democratic principles that informed his participation in the pro-democracy struggle.

The Obioha family said his death has left an “immeasurable void,” but added that they take comfort in the fullness of his life, the people he touched and the legacy of service he leaves behind.

The family expressed appreciation for the prayers, condolence messages and expressions of love received since his passing, while appealing for privacy as they mourn.

Details of the memorial and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later.

Chief Ralph Obioha’s death marks the passing of one of the figures associated with Nigeria’s historic struggle for democratic rule and the restoration of the June 12 mandate.

May his soul rest in peace.
