Brighton and Hove Albion brought Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season to an abrupt end with a convincing 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
Arsenal had won their opening four league matches and seven games across all competitions before travelling to Brighton. However, Mikel Arteta’s side struggled to cope with the hosts’ intensity, pressing and attacking movement.
Brighton took the lead in the 31st minute through Pascal Gross, who fired a low shot into the bottom corner after the hosts created space around the Arsenal penalty area.
Arsenal had an opportunity to respond before the break, but Bukayo Saka was denied from close range by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton then doubled their advantage shortly before half-time, with Charalampos Kostoulas finding the bottom corner with a long-range effort to give the hosts a 2-0 lead at the interval.
The home side continued to control proceedings after the restart and added a third goal in the 57th minute. Chema Andrés rose highest to head home from Gross’ corner, putting Brighton firmly in command.
Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances as Brighton maintained their intensity and defensive discipline. The hosts also had opportunities to increase their advantage before the final whistle.

The defeat marked Arsenal’s first loss of the season and ended their hopes of starting their title defence with eight consecutive victories.
The result lifted Brighton to third place, while Arsenal remained above them on goal difference.
For Brighton, the emphatic victory provided a major statement of intent, while Arsenal will now look to recover quickly from their first setback of the campaign.
