Former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, has condemned the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State.
Babangida described the incident as tragic and deeply disturbing, extending his condolences to the families of the deceased and the people and government of Niger State.
In a statement issued in Minna by Dr. Danladi Umar Abdulhameed, the former military president commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
He also commended the Niger State Government for its immediate response, particularly the decision to establish a committee of inquiry and commence medical and forensic examinations to determine the circumstances and actual cause of the deaths.
Babangida urged residents, particularly youths and families of the deceased, to remain calm while investigations are ongoing.
He stressed that the ongoing probe is necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident and ensure that appropriate action is taken based on the findings.
The former military leader also appealed to all parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions or threaten peace and security in the state.
Babangida expressed hope that the investigations would be conducted transparently and provide the affected families and residents of Niger State with clear answers about the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
