A deadly ambush by suspected armed assailants has claimed the lives of at least ten security personnel and several civilians in Kebbi State, throwing the Giro Masa community in Shanga Local Government Area into mourning.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, targeted a military formation, leaving nine soldiers and one police officer dead. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the gunmen, heavily armed and operating in large numbers, overwhelmed the security operatives in a coordinated assault. In the aftermath of the attack, the assailants reportedly set ablaze two military gun trucks, underscoring the intensity of the confrontation.
Several civilians were also caught in the crossfire, though the exact number of civilian casualties remains unclear as of press time. Survivors described scenes of chaos and panic as residents fled for safety amid sustained gunfire.
Confirming the incident, Nasir Idris visited victims at the mortuary and the Accident and Emergency unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday. The governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, describing the attack as “a sad and tragic incident.”
“These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation,” Idris said while addressing journalists. He assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured and provide necessary support to the families of the fallen security personnel.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state, emphasizing that efforts would be intensified to safeguard lives and property. Following his hospital visit, he proceeded to the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment.
