A controversial Singaporean blogger, Amos Yee, has been deported from the United States back to Singapore, where he is expected to face fresh legal charges.
Yee, now 27, first gained international attention in 2015 after posting a series of offensive online videos criticizing Singapore’s founding leader, Lee Kuan Yew. His remarks, which also targeted Christianity, sparked widespread outrage in Singapore, a country known for its strict laws on religious harmony and public conduct.
At just 16 years old, Yee was arrested and jailed after dozens of police complaints were filed against him. Despite the backlash, he also attracted supporters who viewed him as a symbol of free speech in a tightly regulated society.
In 2017, Yee was granted asylum in the United States after convincing immigration authorities that he faced persecution in Singapore. However, his time in America took a dark turn.

In 2020, he was arrested and later convicted for possessing child pornography and grooming a 14-year-old girl online. According to court records, Yee used messaging platforms to lure the victim and shared explicit images.
After serving his sentence, Yee was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in November 2025. He later signed deportation papers, leading to his return to Singapore.

Yee is now expected to appear in a Singapore court, where he will likely be charged for evading mandatory military service under the country’s Enlistment Act. In Singapore, all male citizens are required to serve two years in the military once they turn 18.
Authorities have not confirmed whether additional charges will be filed against him.
Yee’s case continues to stir debate around free speech, accountability, and the consequences of online behavior across different legal systems.
